Things to do in the Basque County – Outdoor Pursuits and Camping in the Basque County.

Basque Country

After a weeks camping in the Spanish wilderness in Navarre, by wilderness we mean dust… We travelled through the Basque county from Zaragoza, to San Sebastian and then Bilbao we found plenty to do on the way. If you like wild swimming and walks in to the wild then there’s plenty of that about.

An hour or so after leaving Zaragoza we found some beautiful lakes to swim in and trees to wonder about in. Continuing our journey in our beat up VW Camper we finally arrived in San Sebastian only a few short hours after our friends who had set off cycling the day before. Our brave friends who had cycled the journey from Bilbao to, Zaragoza and then to San Sebastian had found camping and cycling throughout Spain to be fairly simple and cheap, wild camping isn’t strictly legal, but they got stuck camping on some beaches (how horrible or maybe not…) and in some beautiful woody spots, as well as traditional camp-sites.

Camping at traditional camp-sites in Northern Spain in mid July near Bilbao, can be a fool-hardy idea, or we thought so after trying a LOT of them before getting cramped into the world’s smallest pitch in a pleasant but very crowded and family orientated camp-site.

Definitely worth the road trip and hardship of finding new places to stay and camp as you see tonnes more of what the Basque Country has to offer.
